Did you know that a cart that carries a coffin is called a bier (pronounced ‘beer’)? Originally the hand pulled biers were for peasants who couldn’t afford horses to pull their bier, but in present day funeral practices a hand pulled bier is a fab way for families to be involved in the funeral. An interesting alternative to carrying the coffin on shoulders.
My buff coffin pictured here is on a gorgeous bier offered by Humber Woodland of Remembrance, a lot of natural burial grounds will often have a bier available on request.
When I finally start my natural burial ground dream, we hope to have a horse drawn bier!
